                Many years ago a king wanted to find the wisest man in his kingdom. He wanted the man to be his prime minister.  “how can I find the wisest man ?” he aksed his wife dan his friend. “ask everyone in kingdom to make a wish and after that choose the man who the wisest wish.” the queen said. “yes” king agree. “that’s a good idea.”

                The king wrote a letter to all newspaper. He requested everyone in kingdom to make one wish. “you must write your wish on postcard and send it to palace.” The king wrote in his letter. A few days later the postcards arrived at the palace. There were many thousand of them.

                “oh dear.” He said a few hours later to his wife. “the kindom full of idiots. Many say, I wish to be rich. Others say, I wish to be handsome.” He pointed a pile of postcard. “they all say, I wish to marry the most beautiful girl in the world.” He sighed sadly “there isn’t one man with any wisdom.”

                         More postcards arrived the next day and the day later. For many weeks the king spent all day and half in the night reading the postcards. They all said the same thing. Then, at last. The king found  a postcard that was different.

                “wife, I have found him! I have found the wisest man!”. “Tell me what he wishes for?” his wife asked. The king read the postcard to his wife. It said, “I wish I know what to wish.”

Crime In Cities

            Crime is a serious problem in big cities and it is getting worse every year. This is what the police departments around the country said in their reports last week. The subways are more dangerous. The streets are more dangerous. You may not  even be safe in your own home. Why the problem is so serious now? This is not an easy a question to answer. There are may not be a single answer. Many problems seem to make cities so dangerous.

            One of the problem is money. To fight crime a city needs police officers, cars and gun. These are cost by a lot of money. But right now cities do not have much extra money. So, there are not enough police officer, cars and guns for the cities.

              Another problem is drugs. Crime studies show that many criminals use and sell drugs. After they start taking drugs, they want to have more. However, drugs are very expensive. So, these people may sell to other people to make money or they may steal money to get more drugs.

            There is an even more important cause of crime. Cities have rich and poor neighborhoods. In the poor, neighborhoods, jobs are hard to find. Many young people don’t have much hope for a better life. They only know one way to make better living for themselves. That way to sell drugs or steal. So, some of this young people become criminals.

It is not going to be easy to change these crime problems. We must first changes many of the laws about drugs. We must change the way cities spend their money. Until the crime problem will not go away and we will live in far.

Ingatkah anda pada Pancasila?

Perjalanan pulang ke jakarta menggunakan bus umum, membuat saya bertemu dengan banyak pribadi termasuk pengamen. Ketika dalam perjalanan, mereka menyanyikan lagu mengenai pejabat tak hafal akan pancasila, menteri yang salah urutan dalam menyebutkaan Pancasila. Lalu, saya pribadi menantang pengamen tersebut untuk dengan lancar dan lantang mengucapkan Pancasila. Mereka awalnya percaya diri tetapi tetap saja terbata-bata di pertengahan. setidaknya, lebih baik dibanding dengan kondisi yang mereka gambarkan di lagu yang mereka bawakan.

Pancasila diperoleh dari perjuangan yang amat sangat lama. Setiap nilainya sangat fundamenta di kehidupan bangsa Indonesia. Jangan lupakan Pancasila. Indonesia ada sampai saat ini hanya karena Pancasila masih menjadi dasar negara yang mengatasi perbedaan d Indonesia.

Syahdan, Orpheus, tokoh dalam mitologi Yunani kuno, menyanyi dengan suara menyayat. Ia mempersembahkan nyanyiannya iitu untuk Eurydice, istrinya yang  meninggal di patuk ular. Rupanya suara Orpheus menggugah hati Hardes, dewa penguasa kehidupan manusia.
